As part of its Q3 FY2020 [PDF] earnings report, Square Enix shared a little bit of an outlook on the months to come. In particular, the publisher lightly touched on the subject of next-gen consoles. President Yosuke Matsuda was asked whether Square Enix is already working on next-gen titles. Matsuda revealed that because both PS5 and Xbox Series X will be backwards compatible with the current generation of games, the publisher intends to make its games available across both generations. As for next-gen-only titles, however, Matsuda said that it will be a while before that happens.
“The next-generation consoles will have backward compatibility, so we plan for the time being to make our new titles available for both current and next-generation consoles,” Matsuda told investors. “It will therefore be somewhat farther down the road that we release titles exclusively for the next-generation consoles.” This isn’t particularly surprising, of course. Although you will see next-gen exclusives at launch, most publishers tend to wait for the install base to grow before committing to big exclusives. Even Microsoft doesn’t plan on having Xbox Series X exclusives for at least a year after launch.
