Genshin Impact, the action RPG from Chinese developer Mihoyo, has so far grossed over $100 million in revenue worldwide since its release two weeks ago. In its first week of release, Genshin Impact reached the number two spot on iOS’ list of highest-grossing games, according to Sensor Tower. This is in part off the back of over 23 million downloads on iOS and Android during the same window (17 million in four days), according to App Annie. This makes Genshin Impact the biggest new IP launch for a Chinese developer ever, which is a significant milestone for the Chinese games industry, whose games rarely hit it big overseas. The process hasn’t entirely been without problems, of course. Genshin Impact garnered some controversy for how it handles microtransactions and free-to-play elements. Away from monetisation, the game found itself in hot water over censoring a long list of words, including Hong Kong, Taiwan and others to comply with Chinese guidelines.
