The trailer introduces aspects of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla that we haven’t seen so far, primarily in terms of how Eivor and the other Vikings live outside of war. It juxtaposes their identity as “heartless” and “godless” barbarians with Eivor letting innocent people escape mid-battle, while grave combat scenes are intertwined with playful sparring in a pastoral village. It’s also our first proper look at female Eivor, given that Valhalla’s marketing has predominantly focused on the male protagonist so far....

Shown during E3 2021 as part of a discussion with Turtle Rock Studios’ lead game designer, Brandon Yanez, the Back 4 Blood PvP gameplay trailer shows off how this mode “complements the game’s cooperative campaign elements,” providing its own twist on team-based strategy. In Swarm mode, two squads of four will face off against each other in a best-of-three series of rounds as teams swap between playing as the Cleaners and the Ridden....

You can try The First Descendant for yourself in a Steam beta scheduled for October 20-26. The Steam beta will start Thursday, October 20 at midnight PT, 3am ET, 8am UK, and runs until Wednesday, October 26 at 11:59pm PT, 2:59am ET, 7:59am UK (October 27). Valve has announced that next week, the first Steam Game Festival for 2021 will kick off. The February edition of The Steam Game Festival will be live February 3-9, free for everyone. Next week’s event will feature over 500 free game demos, available to download and play for the duration. The former president of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime has given his two cents on what is apparently planned for this year’s E3. Speaking to Danny Pena on Gamertag Radio – as spotted by VGC – the Nintendo vet said that what has been laid out in leaked plans for E3 2021 doesn’t sound that exciting. A report earlier this month said that this year’s LA trade show would be a digital-only show with streams from top-level publishers, as well as influencers and media partners....

Nioh 2 has sold over one million units since its release in March. Developer Team Ninja announced the milestone earlier, and released a new patch that brings a number of free additions. For starters, Nioh 2 now has a photo mode. The photo mode features the usual filters and ways to adjust the image, including the ability to move the camera position. The game has received nine new missions, split between Sub-mission and the challenging Twilight Mission....

Sony has clarified that there is no upgrade path for existing owners of Spider-Man on PS4 to get the upcoming PS5 remaster. The writing has been on the wall since developer Insomniac Games confirmed that saves won’t transfer between the two. While the PS4 version will be playable on PS5 through backwards compatibility, as with thousands of other games, the remaster is a different story. It will not be available for purchase separately, and is only included as part of the Miles Morales Ultimate Edition....

March tracked software spending reached its highest total for a March month since 2011 when it hit $787 million. The quarter, spanning January - March, saw a decline of 8% to $1.4 billion. Pentiment is a beautiful piece of historical fiction. Set in a small Bavarian town during the Protestant reformation, it leverages a historically inspired art style to tell a sweeping tale of loss, love, and everything in between. It’s one of those games that makes having a Game Pass subscription feel like you’re cheating the system somehow. But it’s also the kind of game that really exemplifies the value of a first-party subscription service, as an engine of discovery for the user, but also as a wealth-spreading mechanism that means it’s easier for things like Pentiment to get made in the first place....
